Body care

Having a healthy body & well maintained boots is just as important as comfort. Here are a few tips & information to help keep your boots & body in tip top condition.

Footwear has an enormous influence on the way feet move yet, so many overlook the importance of a proper well cushioned shoe. The body uses natural methods to decrease the forces of impact and absorb shock in the lower part of the Body. Generally, it is considered that a shoe is required to reduce the forces further.

Steel Blue has been devoted to developing the most comfortable work boots with Trisole Comfort Technology, absorbing more shock and providing cushioning for the feet from day-to-day fatigue. Here are some tips to help you move well and stay well:

Lifting
With your feet shoulder-width apart, bend at the hips and knees. Grip the load firmly and hold it close to your body, tighten your stomach muscles and use the strong muscles of your legs to lift. Keep your back as straight as possible, and gently breathe out. Avoid twisting - turn by using your feet, not your back.

Standing Posture
Think tall: chest lifted, shoulders relaxed, chin tucked in and head level. Posture should be stable, balanced and relaxed, when sitting, walking or standing.

Sitting
Don't stay seated for too long, ideally no more than 20 minutes. Stand up, stretch and walk around. The right back support will also help. Also ensure that your workstation and computer are correctly positioned.

Exercise
Stay in shape - healthy body-weight is less strain on your back. Your physiotherapist can show you how to keep your back flexible and strong with correct back and abdominal exercises.

Driving
Good support from your car seat will prevent back pain. If you need lower back support, use a lumbar roll or a rolled-up towel.

Sleeping
Your mattress should be firm enough to support your natural shape.

As an employee, you can maintain your foot health. Here's how:

  • Wear good quality work socks and change them every day.
  • Ensure your safety footwear is comfortable. Good quality, well-fitted safety footwear should not be uncomfortable and will need very little breaking-in time.
  • Recognise that comfortable safety footwear will reduce fatigue and keep you fresher and alert longer.
  • Be aware of the hazards in your workplace. If you have concerns about foot safety, alert your employer or safety officer. Make sure your shoes fit properly and that you wear appropriate shoes for your workplace
  • Remember, feet shouldn't hurt. Sore feet are a sign of a problem.
  • Visit a podiatrist if you have foot problems.

As an employer you can prevent foot problems at work:

  • Ensure the right footwear is used for the right job. There are many brands, designs and types of safety footwear available. Ask the manufacturer or supplier to advise on the correct footwear for use.
  • Comfortable safety footwear increases productivity and creates a happier work place.
  • Have your employee try on the footwear to make sure the shoe or boot is the correct size and fits comfortably. Good quality safety footwear should not be uncomfortable if correctly fitted.
  • Promote foot health in your workplace, especially during Foot Health Week (mid-October).
  • Contact a podiatrist to give a talk on foot care to employees.
  • Encourage your staff members to report foot problems, however minor (e.g. safety shoes that rub).
  • Look at the foot health record of your company - multiple foot complaints may suggest the workplace itself is creating foot problems.
  • Do a 'Foot Risk Assessment' in the workplace - look for ways to minimise the burden on your employees' feet. (A podiatrist may be able to assist you with assessing workplace foot risks).
  • Emphasise to the safety officer or occupational physician that foot complaints should be taken seriously.
  • If your employees wear safety shoes, ask yourself: Do we stock an adequate range of safety shoes to suit every staff member? If not, out-sourcing the supply and fit of safety shoes may be more cost-effective.

Allow employees a crossover period when they exchange their old safety shoes for a new pair.

All European safety boots must comply with the EN ISO 20345 standard. This certification can only be requested by the manufacturer. Replacing the manufacturers insole with your own is considered an adaptation of the shoe and therefore the certification will no longer apply. In other words: your safety boots are no longer validated safety boots.

If you are in need of supportive insoles for a medical reason, Steel Blue has created the solution to keep your safety boots compliant with the ISO-standard.

Steel Blue has a unique agreement with Top Podotherapie Nederland. In cooperation with Steel Blue Top Podotherapie has protocolled the guidelines within which they can tailor-make a supportive insole that is still compliant with the EN ISO 20345 standard. This sole Combined with the Steel Blue boots this sole has been officially certified. For more information you can contact us directly or you can contact Top Podotherapie Nederland.
