World Suicide Prevention Day and R U OK? Day

A conversation could change a life.

Each day in Australia, more than eight people die by suicide. On the 10th of September, two important suicide prevention initiatives take place; R U OK? Day and World Suicide Prevention Day.

It’s important as a global community to check in on friends and family, starting with asking them “Are You OK?”; a conversation could change a life.

Steel Blue is proud to support our partner Beyond Blue to help reduce the stigma associated with suicide, with conversation tips from R U OK? on how to start, and most importantly, how to continue the conversation.

Keep the conversation going.

This year Beyond Blue is sharing the powerful voices of eight people who have experienced suicidal thoughts or a suicide attempt and found their way through.

These people are sharing their story to help others who may be going through a similar experience, and the people close to them, to understand what they went through, what helped them and what can be done to support someone in their situation. This video contains content that might be distressing for some viewers. Click here to view their stories.

If you are having thoughts or feelings about suicide, there is support available. You are not alone. If you often feel helpless, hopeless, or like you’re a burden to your loved ones, there are things you can do to help get you through.  If you are worried about someone you know, you don’t need to be a professional to start the conversation. Asking someone if they’re experiencing suicidal thoughts will not put the idea in their head.

To learn more about warning signs and advice on how to start the conversation with someone you’re concerned about visit the Beyond Blue World Suicide Prevention Day landing page.
